The daredevil actor is currently in works with Universal to bring the audience to space in an upcoming film with plans to shoot some scenes at the International Space Station. The project is set to be directed by Doug Liman (2002’s The Bourne Identity, and 2007’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith) who has previously worked with Cruise while directing Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and American Made (2017). The project is still in its early stages of development with no official filming schedule or release date and will reunite Cruise and Liman for their third project together.
Previous films have featured Tom Cruise performing his own stunts from holding onto the exterior of a plane as it takes off and scaling the world’s tallest building in the Mission Impossible movies to experiencing incredible G-forces in a fighter jet for Top Gun. Â
The space-bound project has a tentative partnership with the private spaceflight company SpaceX and is planning to film a portion of the movie aboard the International Space Station. A chairperson from Universal released a statement saying, "Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He's taking the world to space. That's the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom, that does contemplate him doing just that. Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station."
